About Dr. Hahn

Dr. Paul Hahn, MD, PhD, FASRS is a board-certified, fellowship trained retina specialist.

He grew up in New York City where he attended the Collegiate School. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in Biochemical Sciences. He completed his medical education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he was sponsored by the National Institute of Health (NIH) for completion of his MD along with a PhD degree in molecular pharmacology investigating novel treatment pathways for dry age-related macular degeneration and other retinal degenerative diseases. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, both ophthalmologists, Dr. Hahn found a passion in treating eye diseases, and he completed his ophthalmology residency at the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the world-renowned Duke University Eye Center, where many of the current vitreoretinal surgical techniques were pioneered.

After completion of his fellowship, Dr. Hahn remained at Duke University as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and retina specialist for almost 4 years, gaining experience in managing the range of routine conditions and the most complex of referred complications. He developed an interest in next-generation treatments and cutting-edge technologies and was the founder and director of the Duke Center for Artificial and Regenerative Vision. Dr. Hahn captured national and international attention in the popular media as the surgeon who implanted the first Argus II “bionic eye” in the Southeast US, restoring vision to an individual with total blindness (see video).

Dr Hahn moved back to the Northeast in 2016, where he joined one of the premier, established practices, NJRetina. He brought this “bionic eye” technology to New Jersey and was the first and only surgeon to perform this surgery in NJ. In addition to leadership roles in the Medical Advisory Committee and the Finance Committee, he served as the Director of Clinical Trials, where he remained on the cutting edge of novel treatments for patients with macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, and other retinal diseases. He has served as Principal Investigator for over 30 clinical trials, many of which have resulted in effective treatments used in our clinics today.

In 2025, Dr Hahn made the decision to start phRETINA Ophthalmology Care, an independent retina practice with a focus on returning to patient-centric care.

Dr. Hahn has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. He has been invited to lecture at numerous national and international meetings on topics such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disease, retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, ocular imaging, and advanced surgical techniques. He has been invited to supervise and provide expert guidance for complex surgeries in the United States and internationally, including the “bionic eye’ surgery. He has maintained active roles as a consultant, advisory board member, and global steering committee member for major surgical and therapeutic companies.

He serves on the Board of the Directors and the Executive Committee of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), the largest organization of retina specialists in the world. He serves as an Oral Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology, ensuring the highest standards of continuing education among the ophthalmology community. He serves on the editorial board of multiple ophthalmic journals and magazines, including the Journal for VitreoRetinal Diseases, Retina Times, and Retina Specialist, among others. He has maintained a Surgery Column, here he would coauthor surgical tips and techniques to educate the broader retina surgeon community. He has been the recipient of numerous prestigious honors and awards for excellence in ophthalmology research, receiving the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology Resident Award (given to the top 4 ophthalmology residents), Ronald G. Michels Foundation Fellowship (given to the top 4 vitreoretinal fellows), the Heed Foundation Fellowship, the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award, and both the American Society of Retinal Specialists Junior and Senior Honor Awards. Dr Hahn is a Fellow of the American Society of Retina Specialists (FASRS), “awarded to members in good standing who have demonstrated consistent commitment to the Society, expertise in the management of vitreoretinal disorders, and the highest ethical and professional standards.”

Most important, Dr Hahn looks forward to providing you with attentive care personalized to your needs, with the highest ethical and professional standards.
